Vote for the worst statement about birth control... →
Planned Parenthood Action Fund asks women to pick the most outrageous, offensive, ridiculous and flat-out unbelievable comment made by a man about women’s health in the past TWO WEEKS. Just in the past TWO WEEKS. All of these whack-a-doodle statements were made in the past TWO WEEKS. Click the link for videos.

Jonathan Franzen, Edith Wharton, and the Problem... →
When Franzen discusses Wharton’s books, he’s insightful and curious. I particularly like his exploration of why he wants Wharton’s characters–and literary characters in general–to get what they want, even if they want things about which he has ethical and moral qualms: more money, social status, a loveless but secure marriage. The vehemence of their desires is contagious. Eventually, they become...

NPR's The Record - Rihanna's 'Birthday Cake':... →
The songs Rihanna has chosen to record, and has sometimes co-written, are not ones I play for my own daughter (though yes, she’s heard them on the radio, and we’ve talked about them). They’re rarely, if ever, feel-good anthems encouraging self-empowerment. Rihanna has basically abandoned such efforts, ceding that ground to her friends Katy Perry and Beyonce. Instead,...

Bill Cunningham on relationships
Interviewer: So I'm going to ask you two very personal questions... you may or may not want to answer. It's completely up to you. But have you ever had a romantic relationship in your entire life?
Bill Cunningham: Now, do you want to know if I'm gay?
Interviewer: Yes.
Bill Cunningham: Isn't that a riot? Well, that's probably why the family wanted to keep me out of the fashion world. They wouldn't speak of such a thing. No. I haven't.
Interviewer: Never in your entire life?
Bill Cunningham: No. It never occurred to me. I guess I just was interested in clothes. That's the obsession. It's probably a little peculiar.
Interviewer: Is that something you regret?
Bill Cunningham: No. I wouldn't even think about it. No, I don't regret it. There was no time. I was working night and day. I mean, I don't know when you'd... Uh, no, it was... And in my family, uh, things like that were never discussed. So it never... It wasn't even in my head or my mind. I wouldn't have known a thing about it. So they needn't have worried.
Interviewer: You've had good friends.
Bill Cunningham: A few people that I've known. Yes. Yeah. Uh... People that... Oh, you mean... Just friends. Oh, Yeah. Yeah. No, I have friends... It's just, I suppose I've... I don't know. You can't be in love with your work, but I enjoyed it so much that it didn't... Yeah. But hey, listen, I am human.

5 drinks for mentions of Amy Winehouse AND Whitney Houston in the same sentence

The Grammys. Think. That they. Were the victim. Of... →
Does domestic violence have a less sophisticated PR machine than Chris Brown does?
Because to me, this situation isn’t all that different. Accepting that Chris Brown gets to perform at the Grammys because some people bought his album is no different from accepting that women without health insurance don’t get to be screened for breast cancer because some VP at Komen is anti-abortion. It may...

MonkeySee: The Incredible Shrinking Liz Lemon →
Over the course of six seasons, Jack has been fully transformed into a condescending, all-knowing daddy, and Liz has been fully transformed into a needy little girl who is eternally terrified of displeasing him. She’s always had a grudging respect for him, but now she simply reveres him and trusts his judgment more than hers. She was once frazzled but smart, harried but competent, capable...

A Brief Introduction to the Female Voices in Arab...
thepoliticalnotebook:
Women in hip-hop music? Forget Nicki Minaj, let’s talk about Soultana, Malikah and Shadia Mansour. The growing hip hop scene in the Middle East and North Africa, often highly political and under a mix of influence from Near Eastern musical traditions to Tupac, has a fabulously strong-voiced female contingent. The West has its Nicki Minajes, sure, but the Arab World comes...
