I JUST TOLD A STRANGER TO SHUT THE FUCK UP
fartwithheadphoneson: It did not feel good. Now… let me ask you guys something… do I have some sort of beacon that draws in random men in my neighborhood and causes them to scold me for next to no reason?! Is it something I’m putting out there??? If you’ll recall… a while back, a man who was traveling at the speed of a snail saw Doug run into the street and proceeded to pull his car up, roll...

A Different Kind of College Ranking
Today’s college graduates face the worst labor market in generations. As a result, many are looking to do good if they can’t do well. Applications to the Peace Corps jumped 18 percent in 2009. The number of students vying for Teach for America slots increased from 18,000 in 2007 to 46,000 this year. The renewal of a desire to serve is heartening. But the truth is that while jobs that allow you...

“THERE IS NO CRYING AT BRUNCH!”
– yup, I read this site on days when I think about making four dollars an hour while helping low-income kids apply to college. And yup, I don’t care what happened the night before, brunch is a beautiful time.

– Mindy Kaling — New York Magazine Yes, it is time. We need a female RESPONSE to Judd Apatow. We need to see movies in which a feminine version of Seth Rogen, who is endearingly rude, clueless, and chubby, perseveres through her adorable naivete and somehow, OMG! charms the pants of a super...

The Why Worry Generation →
Want to make me frustrated, Judith Warner? Write an article about how clueless, useless, and almost adorably naive you think my generation is. Tell me why my self worth should be determined by my ability to get a job in my chosen field, when 1 in 5 people my age can’t get one. I’m so sick of hearing this kind of thing. Am I really to believe that my egregious choice of “casual Friday”...

WatchWatch
joyengel: Rachel Maddow, “Women voters, women’s rights.” There is no place in the world, and no time in history, where restricting women’s reproductive rights makes a people, or a nation, more free or more equal. These extreme positions are without any question a war on America’s girls and women. You need to watch this immediately.

I MEAN SERIOUSLY
There is a girl in the office across the hall from me who wears Crocs to work, like, on the reg, which is making me really intensely regret every minute I spent wondering if I could wear leather gladiator sandals and still adhere to the dress code.

first of fall
For some reason, even though the sounds of summer always stand out in my mind as unique, hopeful entities to which I explored my life, I have a much stronger, lasting connection to the music that carries me into fall. I can remember the distinct lyrics, verses, chords to which I water skiied, skinned my knees, rode my bike with a six-pack in the basket down the middle of empty streets, roasted...

MY Millennial Job Whine
You know what I hate? This bullshit: What is this exciting new subset of blog entries and New York Times white people anomie exactly? What does it look like? Well, it looks like this Times article from yesterday’s edition about a young man with the impossibly ethnic name of Scott Nicholson. He’s a pickle barrel-jawed son of Grafton, MA and a 2008 graduate of Colgate, a New York...

Recent Obsessions: Crop Circle Art
I’ve mentioned my obsession with circles, especially when used in art and design, before. Here are some more of Jim Denevan’s crop-circle-like landscape works, this time in a much more appealing locale, the tidal flats of the Spanish banks, at the Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale. Each work was created and washed away within six hours. Bummer.

I will always be impressed with the ability of people who’ve known you at your worst to bolster and support you during unexpectedly emotional and unspeakably strange, difficult experiences. I continually admire people whom I’ve failed, people of whom, at times, I’ve expected too much or to whom I’ve painted too vulnerable, unflattering of a portrait of myself. People who,...

Questions for Novelist Gary Shteyngart: New York...
The death of reading is a longstanding fear of futurists.  Maybe we’re all wrong and there’s going to be a huge comeback in 10 years where all the kids are going to drop their iKindles and start reading like crazy. “Dude, did you read the latest Turgenev? It’s so sick. This dude is like all over the subject of love and serfdom.” That would be nice.  I don’t know how to read anymore. I can...
