– Michelle Obama’s response to Oscar De la Renta’s criticism of her sartorial choices and probably Cathy Horyn’s criticism of her role as a fashion icon. Interestingly, Mrs. Obama has not yet asked Mr. De la Renta to make clothes for her, in contrast to previous first ladies, who...

Wisconsin moves further backward →
Gov. Scott Walker said Friday he wants the Legislature to quickly pass a bill that would allow a developer to build on a wetland near Lambeau Field, even as the retailer that was envisioned as an anchor for the development announced it would not build on a wetland.
The bill angered environmentalists and conservation groups, who said it effectively negated the rights of citizens to challenge...

an enemy bigger than my apathy
While running the risk of making any of this all about me, I must cautiously admit that whenever something so historical happens, when people do things that are so courageous and impassioned and outside of themselves, I become overwhelmed by imagining myself in their position. There is usually an image of a woman vehemently engaged in the struggle for what she believes that triggers my “What...
The Lessons of Tunisia and Egypt →
“Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Yemen, Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia all contain political and demographic ingredients at least as perilous as those that combusted in Tunisia: youthful populations, high unemployment, grotesque inequality, abusive police, reviled leaders, and authoritarian systems that stifle free expression. There is ample reason for the leaders of those countries to...

Today in disappointments →
This is why I’m fucked up, men of the world. Because a fairly reputable, popular clothing store for the quirky girl with a disposable income can create a bridal line and call it “Beholden,” except for they do it without using any consonants. Thanks for reminding me that even if I want to dress like a strong, independent children’s book editor instead of an Ann Taylor Loft...
I can’t believe they took those away. We liked them so much I ordered a...

wise financial decisions
I have an irrational attitude toward paying ATM fees. I avoid turning to ATMs when I need cash to an outrageous extreme. I will avoid even the ATMs operated by my own bank, promising myself that I will certainly not need cash in the near future, that this is a smart financial move. I refuse to use off-brand ATMs, forcing myself to walk double the distance to find one with no fee, but I resent...

But let us pause for a moment to remember what “redeeming” actually is: atoning...
– Lynn Zinser reminds us what redemption really is - it’s not winning football games. After having already made my feelings about Aaron Rodgers very clear, it probably does not surprise anyone that I view the Super Bowl as, basically, a battle of good and evil.
Roethlisberger →
I love that my brother posted about this article before I did.
inflo:
Augmented by my dislike of cumbersome last names, I have always disliked Ben R. as a sports figure. The fact that people still rant about Michael Vick’s crimes and keep fairly mum about Roethlisberger is shameful to me, not necessarily because of the nature and scope of the crimes, but because of the way in which each athlete...

– President Obama, State of the Union Address, 2011
I’m afraid that too many students DO just memorize equations, and I’m afraid those are the kind of problems we need to be tackling.

– I hope A.O. Scott giggled with delight while proofreading this review, because it’s pretty solid. Even more solid is his suggestion that Mindy Kaling remake a female version of “Wedding Crashers,” because I’d really like to watch a movie about myself when I’m being...

This is the best hair I have ever seen.
ofanotherfashion:
Mimi Nguyen, my co-blogger at Threadbared, found this photograph on a blog called The Swinging Sixties. Unfortunately, there’s hardly any source information except that it was originally published in a Dutch newspaper. Still, look at that hair! Extensions or all natural? Either way, this is a fantastic feat of hair engineering.
I question my life choices, specifically those surrounding my own personal path to greater physical fitness, with some frequency, but never as much as I do on the days when they offer a trampolining class at the Y. Is this considered a legitmate form of exercise? Could I do it and be considered more physically fit? Why is this something of which I was not previously made aware?

Ninety students at Frayser High School in Memphis are pregnant or have given birth this year.
Nearly 100% of the students at this high school qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The school is launching a series of pregnancy prevention initiatives, including after-school programs, an advertising campaign, a program targeting young men at the school, and research initiatives to determine what has...

why bother? →
Apparently, the New York Times thinks law school is futile. You know what else the New York Times thinks is futile? Pretty much everything that is possible to do after graduating from college.
According to the New York Times, there are a lot of things I’m not supposed to be doing right now. I am not supposed to accept a lower paying, entry-level job or a job outside of my field, because it...

Why not regulate guns as seriously as toys? →
“Just since the killings in Tucson, another 320 or so Americans have been killed by guns — anonymously, with barely a whisker of attention. By tomorrow it’ll be 400 deaths. Every day, about 80 people die from guns, and several times as many are injured.”
-Nicholas Kristof
I have always thought that it was a little silly to be allowed to carry guns into places that do not allow...
