Name: The Boy In The Bubble
Artist: Paul Simon
Album: Graceland
It was a slow day
And the sun was beating
On the soldiers by the side of the road
There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio
These are the days of miracle and wonder
This is the long distance call
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all
The way we look to a distant constellation
That’s dying in a corner of the sky
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don’t cry baby, don’t cry
Don’t cry(Source: werewolvesintheiryouth, via kelsium)

LL Cool J // Around the Way Girl
The song is about LL searching for a girl who is streetwise.
-Wikipedia
I think it’s about a lot more than that?
The part about bamboo earrings and a Fendi bag? About meeting LL Cool J halfway? That was basically my entire understanding of what it meant to be “cool.”
…Things you thought it would be cool to be when you were 10, that you spent your whole life in pursuit of becoming, that you have recently realized are doing you no favors in the boyfriend department.

Name: Human Nature
Artist: Michael Jackson
Album: Thriller 25Th Anniversary Edition
michael jackson // human nature
A template for new jack swing and hip-hop soul ballads, ‘Human Nature’ is comparatively slower and more intimate than ‘Thriller’s’ other songs. ‘If this town is just an apple, let me take a bite,’ quivers Jackson’s voice over a cascading synthesizer and percolating bass line. Though written by John Bettis and Steve Porcaro of Toto, the lyrics resonate with Jackson’s yearning to break free from his tower of celebrity and mingle with young people in a ‘city that winks its sleepless eye.’

sun kil moon // carry me ohio
I keep a mental catalog of the best things I take away from strange experiences. My high school “boyfriend”’s best friend made a mix CD for me that featured this song. This song, and most of the others on the CD, became enduring parts of my life that have outlasted the people who put them there. It unintentionally became the background noise for more emotionally significant relationships. Each time it tethered itself to new people, new disappointments, but the song remained the same - I could never love you more.
Still, it’s undeniably the best and only thing I took from that relationship, other than a temporary chip on my shoulder.

Beyonce // Countdown
This song is like proof that God loves us and wanted us to be happy while we agonizingly waited for Beyonce to have her blessed child.
I don’t think I’ve been in a bad mood since I first heard it. HA HA that’s not true. But really, the only thing that makes me mad about this song is that it is not a huge international hit. I am incensed that it is not playing at every party in America right now. I refuse to believe that the words to this song have not become pop culture catchphrases, like “Shake it like a Polaroid picture.” That line is easily as stupid as “Me and my boo in my boo’s coupe, riding.”
This is more than a song, it is an anthem. Seriously, get on board, American teenagers. Sometimes I hate when you start to love the things I have always loved, but with this song, I feel that it is the only proper course of action. I want to hear people very literally screaming these lines from the rooftops.
All up in the kitchen in my heels - dinnertime.

acid tongue // jenny lewis
So I’m sorry, because I probably could have liked you, and I could have probably been a lot better, which would have allowed you to like me too. I’d rather be alone with my pride, drinking two-for-one red wine out of a Snoopy mug as I stay up detailing your minute flaws on a rickety desktop iMac, than sitting next to you, giggling, pretending to be drunk after one cheap drink, and pretending that I’m going to be surprised with whatever outcome you have been carefully planning since somebody told you they had a friend who was “not that bad,” which is what I can only assume people must be saying about me lately.
I acknowledge that I’m getting to the age when you will start to feel obligated to encourage me to enjoy drinking with your single friend, and that is something I’m totally willing to do, but I want you to know something. I’m not single because I’m unhappy and lonely. I’m single because unfortunately, your friend isn’t funny enough to chip away at my good make-up supply or risk missing Saturday Night Live, which is also not always that funny.

I’m still at work, living the American dream of money over bitches, but as long as I can listen to this song, one of my forever-favorites, brought back to my attention by Mindy Kaling’s little mixtape, I will work forever.

brandy // sittin’ up in my room
This song is seriously my life right now. By which I mean, it is an actual description of my life. I’m pretty sure she’s talking about sitting in her bedroom at her parents’ house. This was my jam in middle school - things change by basically they stay the same, right Dave Matthews?
